For those interested in play therapy certification, TMary Ruth Cross and the Association for Play Therapy offers credentials in play therapy based in part on receiving 150 CEU’s in play therapy specific programs. This means that you can start, or continue, your path to play therapy credential by attending the workshops, classes, and/or retreats at the Academy for Play Therapy Training™. All of our workshops, classes, and retreats are taught by Mary Ruth Cross, an approved by the Association for Play Training™! ( Mary Ruth Cross, APT Approved Provider #18-544.) Our programs are approved as continuing education credential for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.

There are many options when it comes to the requirements for play therapy credential. For example, consider the class we call “Riding the Merry-Go-Round: Navigating Family Relationships Through Play Therapy”. Because engaging families through play therapy can have a lot of ups and downs, this class explores how to best integrate families into treatments that improve outcomes and empower all involved. This class, like all classes taught by Mary Ruth Cross and the Academy for Play Therapy Training™, will focus on several different family play therapy models so that therapists and participants can find the right model for every need. Models to be explored include but are not limited to: Mindfulness Based Family Play Therapy (Higgins-Klein), Family Play Therapy (Gil), Theraplay and Fililal Therapy.
One of the most popular and recommended trainings for those on the path to play therapy certification is called “Are you kidding? An introduction to play therapy”. This great foundational class presents the history, theories, and components of play therapy as a model to work with children, adolescents, and families. During this training, we cover psychodynamic theories, cognitive-behavioral models, Ecosystemic Play Therapy, family therapy, and expressive arts. In addition to this foundational class for play therapy credential, Mary Ruth Cross and the Academy for Play Therapy Training™ also offers advanced technique-based classes and classes that teach how to use play therapy with families or couples. Mary Ruth Cross and the Academy for Play Therapy Training™ even offers play therapy approaches to supervision so that new clinical supervisors, as well as more advanced supervisors, have the opportunity to examine different developmental phases clinicians move through. This class is great for those wanting to learn how best to build a competent play therapist and practice.
